Speaker Bios

Shawn Fisher
Head of Information Management, Anglo Platinum
Fisher joined Anglo Platinum in June 2010 as Head of Information Management. Previously, he served as the Head of Information Management at Sasol Nitro and held various other Information Technology positions during his 15 years at Sasol.  Fisher also has extensive experience in business management and plant operations. He holds a BSc Honors degree in Computer Science as well as a National Diploma in Chemical Engineering. Outside of work he enjoys hiking, camping and golf.

David Knox–Whitehead, Head of IT
Marriott Asset Management
David has a B.Com in Business Information Systems and has been in the IT industry for 17 years, starting as a software developer with Softline Ltd in Johannesburg. After occupying various IT management positions, he joined Marriott Asset Management (a member of the Old Mutual Investment Group) in 2004 and is currently the Head of IT for Marriott. Outside of work his hobbies often reflect his passion for IT and he is involved in various web design & usability excellence programmes. Davis also enjoys photography and runs a photography website.

Louise van der Bank
Chief Information Officer, AfriSam

Louise van der Bank was appointed as Chief Information Officer of AfriSam in September 2010.She began her career in 1987 as a programmer at Iscor (now ArcelorMittal) and grew through the ranks to the position of General Manager, Information Management in July 2001. She joined Standard Bank South Africa early in 2005 as the Director, SAP Core Banking, and worked closely with the business to refocus the bank towards a customer centric strategy, enabled by Information Technology. Louise was appointed as Chief Information Officer of the South African Post Office in February 2007 where she and her IT team enabled the drive to discharge the SAPO mandate from Government and the South African people through Group-wide IT and other infrastructure programs.

Frank Pinto
Group CIO - BankservAfrica
Frank started his career 30 years ago as a junior programmer for Barclays, co-incidentally a mere 100m from BankservAfrica’s office.   After 11 years as an independent software developer contracting mainly to FNB and Old Mutual, Frank moved to Nedcor as Program Manager and there completed his MBA.  Subsequent to this he completed his Chartered Marketer qualification. His role as Chief Technical Officer for Edcon enabled him to bring about change that drove new levels of performance and ensured Frank an invite to lecture at the Microsoft University in Germany and international judging of software products.  From Edcon Frank moved to UCS as the COO and was later promoted to CEO.  Joining BankservAfrica in August 2010 as CIO, Frank believes a leader is nothing without a good team. He has extensive experience in software development and ICT architecture and strategy.

Malcolm Laing
Group CIO - Investec Securities Limited

Malcolm started his IT career in 1979 for the then S.A.T.S as an Operator then moved to a development role after attending college in 1981. In 1984 he moved to the private sector in the financial services arena and started with the Fedsure Group in the Group Benefits Division. He worked his way through the development ranks from programmer to the Divisional Head of IT over a period of 18 years. In 2001 Investec acquired the majority of the Fedsure Group and he was tasked with the clean up, consolidation and disposal of Fedsure’s infrastructure and the preparation of the applications for sale of the various books of business. What remained of the Fedsure Group within Investec became Investec Employee Benefits (IEB) and Malcolm served as Head of IEB IT until he moved on within the Investec Group and took on the role of Head of IT for Investec Securities Limited (ISL) in late 2005. In late 2009, after a three year stint in ISL, Malcolm was offered the role of Group CIO which is his current position.

Darryl Twaits
Chief Information Officer (CIO), Tiger Brands Limited
Tiger Brands is the largest branded fast-moving consumer packaged Goods Company listed on the Johannesburg Securities Exchange (JSE). Darryl has been with Tiger Brands for the past sixteen years in a number of executive roles, including: Supply Chain, Logistics, Finance and IT, as well as his current Group CIO role which he has held for the past 5 years.  He is responsible for developing and implementing the IT strategic plan to support the wide range of Business Units in the Group. Darryl is responsible for the for the provision of effective IT services to approximately 4000 users, located at more than 100 sites across a footprint that spans the whole of South Africa and parts of Kenya and Cameroon.

Seaparo Phala
CIO, Department of Arts and Culture
Seaparo Phala is currently the Chief Information Officer for the Department of Arts and Culture. He is also the Chairperson for the Standing Committee on Knowledge and Information Management for the Government IT Officers Council (GITOC).  He has held various  positions in government including serving as Manager:  Information Systems Development as well as a Deputy Director:  Knowledge Management. 

Bram Schreuder 
CIO, Arcelor Mittal
Bram started working in the Steel Industry (Iscor at that time) in 1987 in the Process Automation field, in 1995 was seconded onto the Saldanha Steel project to establish a new Greenfield steel plant on the West Coast of South Africa in Saldanha Bay. Responsibilities included Tender evaluations for the Level 2 process automation systems, ICT systems and services establishment and the recruitment of support staff. In 2008 appointed as Group Manager Information Management for ArcelorMittal South Africa. Responsibilities include a distributed environment with services delivered at 5 main sites spread across the country and covers the full spectrum of IT services namely ICT, SAP, MES and Process Automation.

Sandi Macfie
Director of Revenue (previously Director of IT), Southern Sun Hotels

Sandi Macfie has over 30 years experience in the IT industry and has filled various senior management, consulting and strategic account management roles in business sectors such as hospitality, retail, banking, ICT and investments. Sandi was appointed Director of Information Technology at Southern Sun Hotels in 2000. During 2010, her portfolio expanded beyond IT, to include management of the strategic planning business process and various strategic business projects. Sandi’s experience includes IT management, strategic planning, business and IT alignment, programme and project management and contracts negotiation. Sandi has participated in many technology forums in South Africa and abroad and has presented papers at many industry forums. In November 2011 Sandi won the Computer Society of SA and ITWeb’s “Visionary CIO of the Year 2011” award. Sandi is passionate about business, people and innovation. She believes in the strategic value of IT and its ability to transform an organisation. Sandi is a member of Suthern Sun Hotels’ executive management committee and has recently taken up a new position as Director of Revenue. She looks forward to the challenges of growing revenue through implementing innovative customer-centric strategies.

Evans Munyuki, Head of Technology Architecture 
Absa and Barclays Africa
Evans Munyuki has a varied mix of international and emerging market leadership and management experience. He is currently the Head of Architecture Africa. Prior to this role, Evans was the CIO for the ABSA Business Bank cluster.  Before that, he was the Group CIO for The Kelly Group (made up of 11 Business units in the USA and in South Africa) and listed on the JSE. He previously held the role of Managing Director for the Kelly Group’s Online Digital Channel business (TalentOcean) which saw the group pursuing commercial digital revenues, and complimenting its business model.  Evans worked for IBM for 15 years (in the USA and in South Africa) where he held many key leadership roles including: Managing Executive for IBM’s IT Applications Services business, Technology Services Executive for IBM’s Financial Services Sector business, Go-to-market Executive for IBM’s Technology Services business, Managing Executive for IT Solution Design & Project Management, Project Executive, IT Outsourcing Manager for IBM in the USA, a Systems Analyst at IBM in the USA, the IT Manager at RR Donnelly (USA), and the IT Manager at Kenmar/TSI Electronics in the USA.
 
Strini Mudaly, Group CIO

Strini Mudaly is the group CIO of Gold Fields Limited. Gold Fields limited is one of the world’s largest unhedged producers of Gold with operations in South Africa, Australasia, South America and West Africa, with exploration sites at many locations around the world. Being a global CIO, responsible for global service delivery and managing large budgets, Strini has been focussed on streamlining and improving service delivery as well as delivering high-value projects in support of the Gold Fields business strategy. His primary attention has been directed at achieving improvements in productivity and enabling cost efficiencies across all regions.
 
Matile Malimabe, CIO
Statistics SA
Malimabe’s responsibilities include ensuring a reliable network infrastructure, improvement in service delivery and ensuring information security using a state-of-the-art server and network infrastructure. Stats SA aims to do this by increasing the infrastructure and operations maturity of the department, ensuring that their staff are skilled to deliver the services that the business units in the department need to deliver on its mandates. Six components report to the executive manager. These are Networking, End User Support, Server Management, Application and Database Development, Managerial Support (IT procurement) and IT Risk Management.
 
Pat Williams, Group IT Infrastructure Manager
Aspen Pharmacare
Aspen is a supplier of branded and generic pharmaceuticals in approximately 100 countries across the globe.  The Group is currently represented in South Africa, Australia, Hong Kong, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Dubai, Germany, Ireland, Mauritius, Brazil, Mexico and Venezuela and has 18 manufacturing facilities located on five continents. Pat has global responsibility for the IT infrastructure architecture throughout the Aspen Group. His main focus is to provide the appropriate server, storage and connectivity operating platforms to support a wide range of business applications. Pat and his team are also responsible for the “back-end” IT services common to all businesses such as directory services, mail & collaboration applications, file & print, etc.
 
Rubens da Silva, CIO
Johannesburg Water
Da Silva's working experience has spanned across different industries and countries. He has been fortunate enough to have worked in Brazil, The Netherlands with a large focus on continental Europe and now South Africa. His IT career includes working in the mining industry, consultancy, and now the public sector. He has attended a number of worldwide events, including a Microsoft guest speaker on Unified Communications at Microsoft's Tech event in Cote D'Azur in France. He was one of last year’s CSSA's Visionary CIO finalists and presently works at Johannesburg Water a state owned company of the City of Johannesburg.
 
Neville Perry, Acting Group Chief Information Officer

Neville Perry, has over 22 years of IT experience in many disciplines from Operational support, Technical Specialisation right through to Architecture and Strategy. He has primarily been working within the Financial services sector through this period. At present he is the Acting Group CIO for BancABC, a banking Group operating in the SADC region. He has extensive experience in all facets of IT infrastructure, networking, security and applications supporting the Financial Services sector.
 
Sindisiwe Moloi Dlamini, CIO
Transnet Rail Engineering
In 1999 she held two positions and also headed the  LUPC as a CEO while working part time. In 2002 she became the CIO (Chief Information Officer) of CIPRO (Companies Intellectual Property) entity of DTI at Department of Trade and Industry on constancy basis. She was offered a full time position but turned it down due to her commitment in the community project and also taking into consideration of her strategic career parthing. She is currently heading the ICT division as a CIO at Transnet Rail Engineering an operating division of Transnet South Africa.
 
Melody Fourie, Group IT Executive
Tiger Wheel & Tyre
Melody Fourie began her academic career studying Sports Science, prior to falling in love with IT. Fourie has worked in the IT industry for more than 17 years in various management and consulting roles. Career highlights have seen Fourie covering portfolios within training, business analysis, and from programming to business solutions architecture, prior to joining TWT as IT manager and later joining the board of executives.
Fourie’s key long-term responsibility is to focus on planning IT initiatives to ensure the organisation does not lose sight of the importance of IT. Her portfolio has recently expanded beyond IT, to include the management of strategic business projects with a key focus on aligning IT with business requirements.
 
Melanie Burke, CEO

Melanie Burke is an independent change management consultant, who runs her own company [MAB and Associates (Pty) Ltd] which focuses on transformation and innovative technology solutions for social development and business support.  
 
Sylvia Pugin, CEO of FNB iSpace - Information Solutions
FNB
Sylvia started her career as a professional tennis player and once she ran out of cash she came home to serve articles with KPMG as it is now known.  Sylvia studied through UNISA and qualified in 1986. She has worked in the financial services industry for 15 years. The last 10 years, with the FirstRand Group, she has been in a change management role for implementing financial processes, people and technology. At present she is responsible for heading up the information hub at FNB together with the responsibility of information governance, master data and meta data management.
 
Potlaki Maine, General Manager (IT) 
SABC
Potlaki is the General Manager – IT at the South African Broadcasting Corporation where he is in charge of the IT strategy and delivery of IT services and platforms in a rapidly transforming media /broadcasting business. This year, SABC IT is involved in the Digital Library project. This solution seeks to provide a long-term centralised digital repository for audio, video and other media content and to make it available for exploitation and re-use on other intended broadcast platforms.
